About PVRUK

PVRUK is dedicated to bringing the latest news about PVRs (Personal Video Recorders), DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) relevant to the UK.

As well as the news, as it breaks, we'll be finding you up-to-date reviews of hardware and software, showing you how to build your own PVR, and discussing relevant technologies.

PVRUK exists because my beloved Tivo is no longer available in the UK (except second-hand), and when I started looking for a future replacement, there seemed to be a dearth of information. Hopefully my search for a credible alternative will be of use to others.

There is an alternative to the Tivo for those wanting Freeview. The Thomson DHD4000 is available in Dixons/Comet now. Also, cheaper at Unbeatable.co.uk

I bought a Fusion FRTV150 from Argos at the weekend for £199.99. Functionally, it seems pretty good - menus work OK, good picture quality and it hasn't crashed yet. However, the build quality is very poor - loose cover scress and misshaped top cover, and the cooling fan is noisy - you can hear it above a news report on the TV, even when the PVR is inside a TV cabinet.

Does anyone know whether all of the FRTV150s are noisy? Are the other brands noisy as well?

Which is the best twin-tuner box to buy?

Hi

I have seen an intresting problem with the Humax PVR8000T for your readers.

It seems for some reason, the Humax is unable to decode Prologic surrond sound via either analog or digital outputs. I did a final test on this, this weekend when ITV was showing Jurrasic Park.

Using the Humax, nothing was heard from surrond speakers connected via my Denon Dolby/Prologic II amp, via either Analalog or Digital outputs on the Humax.

I then replaced the Humax back to my orginal Pioneer DVB-T box, it has both Analog and Digital output. And bingo watching same Jurrasic Park was able to clearly hear surround sound via both Analog and Digital outputs.

Have the latest code from Humanx.

hardware Version NEO Rev 1.0
Swoftware version PGTTF 1.00.14
Loader h3.07
System ID 15b3.0000
Update 30 Sep 2004

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue, it does not make sense as I bought this box with need for Optical out so should be better than competitors, but if it can't do proLogic decode correctly then this is very disappointing.

I have sent report to Humax twice now with no feedback.

Regards

i read in may this year that digifusion is to launch a twin freeview, 80GB hard disc and dvd recorder all in one. due for release this autumn. i can't find any further info and the digitech website is not functioning. is this product still due for release?

I am weighing up the Fusion FVRT 200 and the Inverto, but have just seen the Humax PVR9200T on EmpireDirect.
Any opinions on this? I am looking for a PVR with twin tuner and like the sound of the functionality of the Inverto and Humax with PiP and one touch recording (for my missus).
However, the Fusion appears to have been a consistent performer and I suppose that a new release must be imminent with a larger HDD.
Any ideas?

I've just bought a digifusion Freeview HDD recorder. I'm very pleased with it despite its having only 1 timer. The 2 tuner version is a completely different machine and not half as , for me, pleasant and easy to use. Incidentally, my current model is identical to the Astratec but a bit cheaper. My question is, can I record from NTL onto the HDD? I can't find any way of doing this.

Can anyone help i have a Panasonic TU-CTH100 and it annoyingly keeps on missing the ends off programmes I have recorded - I have tried update downloads, manual programming for recording - the clock is correct - but I still miss at least 5 minutes off the end of programmes
